House of Lies : How Management Consultants Steal Your Watch and Then Tell You the Time, by Martin Kihn

This is a great book, largely because it is very different from the sensationalist, anger-fuelled words on the back of the cover (and rather removed from its title, too).It is a very well written, humorous description of how management consultancies work, seen from the eyes of a junior staff member. I recognised almost every situation as part of my own experience many years ago (roughly from the same time the book was written). The jargon, the mechanics, the lifestyle: it is almost a training manual on what to expect. The book captures the nuances, the subtleties, the sometimes glamorous and the mostly unglamorous (or downright depressing) experiences every consultant has had. The depressing parts (insane hours, characterless hotels, bad food, unbearable work events, personal sacrifices, etc.) are the funniest, as they are the ones that mostly ring true and are forever fresh in any consultant’s memory. The cynical description of consultants as highly aware of their superior education and intellect compared to their clients, and how they learn to annihilate their egos, hide their lifestyle, and be invisible to be effective, is very accurate. Is the book about lies and consultants scamming clients? Absolutely not. In fact, the book very well describes how consultants tend to land in poorly run companies with mediocre managers, and work insanely hard to, in the author’s words, “accomplish in very rapid order a daunting, discreet piece of fact-finding and analysis, that they are then required to present in exceedingly clear and convincing form to their client”. Which is also why it’s irrelevant that they don’t have experience in the business they are analysing. The book is also very good at explaining how consultants are used to point out the obvious when office politics don’t allow it, so the client ends up doing the right thing (or to serve the client’s interest). Are consultants Boy Scouts? No. Grow up.Finally, for those who’ve seen the show of the same name: other than a couple of character names, there is close to nothing in this book that made it to the show. The show is an idealised, glamorous version of Consulting most consultants wish they had experienced, or at best have experienced glimpses of. This book is the reality: all the way to the awful cafeteria food and the single cubicle for five people.

I discovered this book because it served as the basis for the Showtime tv series of the same name. I enjoyed the book much better. Kihn's writing is witty and insightful, but with a completely different sensibility than the show. It's like the show and book are related in name only. If you're thinking of going into consulting, read this first to make sure you know what you're getting yourself into.

This is a truly enjoyable book with some deep humor. It reminds me of the kinds of psychological twists in Malcolm in the Middle. But at same time, I'm disappointed in Kihn's failure to position his product to attract the right customers - business professionals who can appreciate some light-hearted humors. Instead, it attracted the particular segment of buyers who seem to particularly enjoy the misery of others (the same people who would probably also enjoy Jerry Springer or Dr Phil) The truth is, all corporate jobs are terrible. If the same book were written about accountants or project managers, it wouldn't be any less hysterical and self-deprecating. In comparison, a management consulting job is probably better than what these people want to believe.Should have hired some consultants to set the marketing plan straight before publishing the book. It deserves 5 stars all the way.

Ah yes, management consulting. having worked in that field for 15 years, I have to say Mr Kihn has accurately depicted many situations i've been in from writing/re-writing powerpoint presentations in the wee hours to the dreaded team dinner .... hilarious, and true.

Quite a hilarious book that was the inspiration for House of Lies the TV series. Yet the TV series is funnier than this book. I appreciated the dictionary of consultants words and tongue in cheek quick summaries of the Worlds Best business books. The portrayals are so gritty and honest that you wonder how the industry of consulting could sustain itself. Yet it did for many years. Its an easy book to read and good for a cross country flight. But get it out of the library - not a keeper.

I love this book because long ago it taught me how I did not want to be...and how to identify helpful consultants from the shady consultants.

this was the highlight of my summer ( and I have VERY good summers...)!Like any great comedy - it has a lot of deep dark thoughts, it is provocative and clever and everything else that discriminating person could expect from such a comedy/drama.

Huge fan of the show and an ex-consultant. I figured this book would be right up my alley and would remind of Liar's Poker, but for consulting. Honestly, it's a shame that finance gets so many movies and television shows, but the equally as shady world of consulting gets no love.Sadly, this book just wasn't that entertaining. I felt like Martin was overly critical of everything about the industry, but in a way that comes off as more unbelievable than based on fact. He passionately hates HBS and McKinsey, but seems to be more focused on the fact he didn't go there and not how bad they really are. Also, sometimes to prove a point he uses horrible terrible math, sometimes admitting it. When explaining the reach of McKinsey and HBS, clearly takes a lot of liberties in trying to make his point.I could give a lot of things a pass if the stories were more entertaining.

I haven't seen the TV series this book inspired but as professional writers will have been involved it's probably more fun. Nonetheless this is a useful insight into a professional world people tend to misrepresent (consultants lie and lie and lie...)

moments of laugh out loud funny but not quite as sustained as I'd hoped. unruspricingly very US centric. not really like the TV show. worth a read but not outstanding

Although I’ve never been a management consultant myself, I have done lots of other consulting work and spend a lot of time with them. This book made me laugh out loud a few times — often when it cut a little to close in a perfect skewering — but it also dragged a bit at times. The stories that feel based on actual experiences are engaging and Marty is a very funny storyteller, keeping the narrative moving while delivering a pretty accurate (if wholly exaggerated) view of life on the road. Some of the intellectualizing around those stories could have used a more ruthless edit, but it was interesting nonetheless.Fans of the TV show may be disappointed by how much of what they love there isn’t found here. Cheadle’s version of Marty bears little resemblance to the book version in almost every way other than that they’re both consultants. None of the Pod’s characters exist in the book per se, though you’ll find the roots of them in some of the people who briefly appear throughout.Recommended for anyone who has contact with the black art of consulting, whether through hiring, collaborating, barely tolerating, or participating.

First of all I want to mention that I do recommend this book to people interested in consulting. The author presents easy to read and entertaining anecdotes from his time at Booz & Company. He does this with a healthy portion of humor and sarcasm. However, at times the reader gets a bit lost in the author's ramblings about certain topics. The book feels a bit unstructured, which is ironic because management consultants are said to be on of the most structured and linear people on the planet. In addition, one does not really learn anything new about the consulting industry. The book does not extend beyond the usual clichés. Anyone who has seen the show on tv will also notice that it has almost nothing in common with the book. Three stars for the witty writing. Overall, this book is worth reading.

I have read several of Keller's books.I have heard him speak and I admire him and his work. This book did not hold my interest. I felt some of hisexamples were far fetched. Actually, I disagreed withsome of his conclusions. Page 40, Male and Female Idolatries. When we elevate the love partner to this position (idol)we want to be rid of our faults? and our feelings of nothingness?Keller was quoting Ernest Becker with the above statement. Many of the people he used as references left me wondering.I like it better when he writes pure Keller. Counterfeit Godsdoes give the reader a lot to think about.

This was not an easy book to read....I got this book after reading the Reason for God and having serious doubts in my faith due to a string of really bad life experiences in the past 4 years: miscarriage, infidelity, divorce, depression, loss of multiple friendships, death of youngest sibling, the list goes on .... and I'm one of those people who did their best to please God and live a good Christian life style. Yet despite my efforts life just kept hitting me with some really hard punches. After reading the Reason for God last month I was at least convinced that God was real but I was still struggling to understand my life and what happened to me and WHY. I saw counterfeit gods and saved it in my to buy list on Amazon for many months. I was uncertain about reading it fearing it would just make me more angry with religion than I already was. So I took a risk and eventually downloaded it.... After the first chapter I wasn't sure I liked it... the examples given seemed to say that if you weren't fortunate enough to end up with good relationships it was somehow due to your lust and idolatry. The Leah Jacob Rachel marriage debacle didn't help because of the many hot messes in the bible that God allowed its a pretty big one. Its also probably one of the most misinterpreted bible stories used tell women to stay in unloving unfaithful marriages because God will bless them.... Or that ongoing debate of how not wanting to be single and wanting a stable marriage and a family makes you either ungrateful, desperate, or lacking in faith.Despite my opposition I kept reading....I'm glad I did....., the book got MUCH better the explanation of idols as not something we do wrong but actually the foundation of all sin and original sin was the catalyst for idolatry, the desire to live apart from God and manage our own lives as if we can control something..... The concept that in this broken world so many factors play into the lives we end up with and lack of FAITH has NOTHING to do with it was like taking a breath of fresh clean air. That one negative belief that has kept me in bondage for YEARS is that I can earn brownie points with God by being a good church going, tithe paying, Sunday school teaching, bible reading, Christian only music listening, modest dressing, polite, abstaining Christian woman. Finally a pastor was admitting that life isn't all about moral behavior and you can't earn your way into blessings or God's mercy and grace. Don't get me wrong I think moral behavior is important but it has to be for the right reasons , which is to glorify God, frankly most examples I had seen were based on getting human approval or people pleasing which is a form of idolatry. He discussed this in excellent detail. He went over every area of idolatry and male and female idolatry and really explored this basic sin. He even admitted to maintain his own idolatry and that its an ongoing process.... for the first time in years I didn't feel like a lonely loser Christian who somehow didn't have faith the right way to not have a crap life.... In the end I not only understood the idols in my life that I needed to work on but I had a renewed hope in God that despite I was 40 divorced single and childless I still have worth in Gods eyes. But God doesn't judge me and he loves me and sees how hard I try. I just have to work on letting God love me in the ways the humans in my life haven't and healing is waiting for me if I'm willing to let go of what the world/church says my life is supposed to look like... God Always will love me and Always has I just couldn't see it because I placed to much importance on my human relationships for happiness. Don't get me wrong I'm not going to become a hermit. I will however be thankful for the family and friends I have left, and focus on replacing my idols with the love God has always had for me.With each passing day being alone is not feeling so lonely. Thanks for this book. If anyone who reads this has experienced any life hardships or doubts or you are just feeling lost in life then read this book... its really surprisingly nothing like what I expected at all and I'm so thankful for that.Tip: Be sure to check the footnotes esp on kindle he gives a lot of information for further study to let go of idols and experience God love, as well as, he gives good points that can't fit in the book. He took one section about the slave girl when discussing power and pride idolatry and in the notes was very clear that taking abuse or neglect was not acceptable and that biblical times had certain standards. All I can say is if you are struggling in your relationships in life or your relationships with God read this book

There are so many things that can become idols in our lives, this book explores some of them. One of the things that stood out is when the love we have for our children turns them into a counterfeit God. When we put our children in the place where God should be, it creates an idolatrous love that smothers the child and strangles the relationship. Idols enslave you and cause you to not put God first and trust him with your children but your identify and joy will become wrapped up in their love and success. This book gets to the heart of the matter which is your motives and intentions.

What I admire most about pastor and author Tim Keller is his ability to engage a postmodern audience with an unfiltered, undiluted Gospel. His message is so culturally relevant --- and so biblical. This book is no exception and comes highly recommended (although my favorite is still The Prodigal God.)He saves the best for last: by far my favorite section of the book is the epilogue. In it, Keller provides some suggestions for uncovering and uprooting the idols that supplant God in our hearts. Here is my favorite passage:"Rejoicing and repentance must go together. Repentance without rejoicing will lead to despair. Rejoicing without repentance is shallow and will only provide passing inspiration instead of deep change. Indeed, it is when we rejoice over Jesus's sacrificial love for us most fully that, paradoxically, we are most truly convicted of our sin. When we repent out of fear of consequences, we are not really sorry for sin, but for ourselves. Fear-based repentance (I'd better change or God will get me") is really self-pity. In fear-based repentance, we don't learn to hate the sin for itself, and and it doesn't lose its attractive power. We only learn to refrain from it for our own sake. But when we rejoice over God's sacrificial, suffering love for us--seeing what it cost him to save us from sin---we learn to hate the sin for what it is. We see what the sin cost God" (172).
